So, I didn't even know this because I rarely drive in the Sandy Springs area, but apparently beginning last month they opened the shoulder lanes on a portion of GA 400 to traffic during rush hour. The idea was that the added lane would help ease congestion. During the first month, they didn't ticket drivers using this lane - even outside the authorized hours (6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.).
However, beginning this morning, drivers who try to speed ahead during non-peak hours can now be issued a ticket. The state says that using the shoulder impedes their ability to quickly rush emergency vehicles to accident sites (don't most accidents happen during rush hour?).
Anyway, folks, you've been warned. Apparently the ticket is quite a hefty one, carrying a $1000 fine and up to one year of jail time. Yikes!
