Where to Eat in the Brand New City of Brookhaven

The votes are in, and in a close race, Brookhaven residents decided to declare their independence! Brookhaven will now be an official city, allowing residents greater control over things like parks, services, and the police department.

When you visit Georgia's newest little city, be sure to check out some of my favorite eats in Brookhaven!

Free Camp for Children of Disabled or Fallen Vets

I was recently contacted about a really cool program for children of military families. Did you know that children of disabled, wounded or fallen military service men and women can go to a week-long free camp right here in Georgia (and at various other locations around the country)? What a great opportunity for kids who have seen some tough times.

The program is called Camp Corral, and there is a participating location in Dahlonega, Georgia. It is at a 4-H camp, so you know they will have all of the fun, summer camp activities kids will love! The camp runs from July 15-20, 2012, and you must apply by June 24.

Priority is given to children of wounded, disabled, or fallen military service members. Children and youth must be between the ages of 8-15 during the week of camp. Children of military service members who have not been wounded in action may also apply. Interested families can apply online.

Ticketing for Shoulder Lanes on GA 400 Begins Today

So, I didn't even know this because I rarely drive in the Sandy Springs area, but apparently beginning last month they opened the shoulder lanes on a portion of GA 400 to traffic during rush hour. The idea was that the added lane would help ease congestion. During the first month, they didn't ticket drivers using this lane - even outside the authorized hours (6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.).

However, beginning this morning, drivers who try to speed ahead during non-peak hours can now be issued a ticket. The state says that using the shoulder impedes their ability to quickly rush emergency vehicles to accident sites (don't most accidents happen during rush hour?).

Anyway, folks, you've been warned. Apparently the ticket is quite a hefty one, carrying a $1000 fine and up to one year of jail time. Yikes!

Yikes!

Looking for more Atlanta camp options? Check out some local day camps!

Yikes!
